Rest in Peace: Three humorous winning stories from the Sherwood Anderson Short Story Contest: “Rest in Peace” (1996), a boy aspiring to be a preacher practices funeral sermons by burying his drunken father; “Everybody’s Business” (1999), a small-town jock futilely tries to score with the new girl at school; and “Burning Bridges” (2002), a rural Virginia woman, trying to set Yankees straight about the real Thanksgiving, causes problems in her daughter’s elementary school, gets herself arrested, and alienates her mother-in-law.

Little Meg Reddingoode: An Appalachian version of the Red Riding Hood tale set in Bedford County, Virginia, during the Revolutionary War period. Young Meg Reddingoode, clad in her mother’s red cloak and carrying a basket of supplies over the mountain to her grandmother, encounters a strange young man in the woods. She declines his offer to accompany her, so he goes on ahead. When Meg knocks on the door of her grandmother’s remote cabin, someone grabs her arm and drags her inside. Meg soon finds herself and her grandmother at the mercy of a Tory.
Ferradiddledumday: The ebook version does not have the illustrations that appear in the print version. Gillie—a skilled spinner of wool—leads a charmed life high in the Blue Ridge Mountains with her pa. When a hailstorm destroys their cash crop and taxes come due, Gillie and her pa risk losing their farm. Then a strange little man gives her the power to spin hay into gold and her home is saved. Years later, when the strange little man returns and demands his payment, Gillie doesn't know what to do.
